 Answer to question #2

Last month you got answer to question #1

  1. What do I do with my hands?
  2. How do I get rid of the nervousness?
  3. What if I can't answer a question?
  4. How are you supposed to handle hecklers?
  5. Do I need to use PowerPoint?
Here are the short answers...

1 - Nothing
2 - Speak
3 - So what
4 - Shut them up fast
5 - If you have to ask, then the answer is a big huge NO

You will receive the longer answers to the above questions each month for the next five months.  Last month you received the answer to #1. Here is this month's answer to question number 2...   The best way to reduce your nervousness is to speak in public as much as possible. Just like anything, the more you do something the more relaxed and comfortable you become.  Find opportunities to speak in public every week. Whether it's speaking up at a staff meeting, volunteering to introduce a presenter, or going out and getting up on the karaoke stage! Join a Toastmasters club and get up to speak at every meeting (that's what I did).   In addition to speaking as much as possible, here are a few other tips to help with those nerves...
  • Visualize yourself succeeding when you present.
  • Realize that your audience supports you and wants you to suceed. They are really interested in hearing you.
  • Minutes prior to your presentation take some deep breaths, listen to your favorite music, go for a walk.
  • When you speak, relax your throat and breathe from your gut not your chest.
  • Prepare, prepare, prepare - know your material extremely well.
  • Get good at hiding your nervousness.  Act confident even when you don't feel it. When you act it, you will feel it and then you will become it!
