Mistakes to Avoid When Presenting to Clients

When giving a presention to market your business avoid these two common mistakes...

Avoid Talking About Your Company

One of the biggest mistakes I see presenters do is that they focus more on their company, product and/or service and less (or hardly none at all) on their audience and their needs. The most important word to remember is "benefits." Always ask yourself: "What is the benefit to my audience? Everything you say must have a benefit to your audience. If it doesn't, then don't say it. If talking about the founder of your company, the history of your company and how it all began is a benefit to your audience, then go for it. Personally, I do not see the benefit in that to your clients, but yet, I see people talk about this all the time. All your audience wants to know is: What is your product or service and what can it do for them? But before they can even learn that, they need to know about you.

Avoid Not Talking About Yourself (in other words, talk about yourself)

One of the other biggest mistakes I see people make is they do not talk about themselves or their experience with the product or service they are providing.  Your audience needs to know who you are and needs to connect with you before they can be open and receive what you have to tell them.  I have a client who sells natural products like household cleaning items, cosmetics and nutritional supplements.  She would tell her potential clients what the products will do for them, but what she didn't tell them was that she was using these products herself and they had made a huge difference in the quality of her life.  When your audience knows that you are a customer too, or that you wholeheartedly believe in the company and product or service, then they are more likely to follow your lead.

I talk to groups about public speaking.  Many people in my audience fear it.  I could tell them what they need to do to get over their fear and become a great public speaker, but they may not be convinced until I tell them that I used to fear it and I used these same skills to become a professional speaker.  Now they are more motivated and inspired to do the same.  I cannot emphasize enough, how important it is, to talk about yourself and share your own personal story/experiences about whatever it is you are presenting to them.  It will make all the difference in the world.

To sum up, don't talk about your company, but talk about yourself!  Always focus on how your presentation is going to benefit your audience.  If you want your audience to trust what you are saying, they need to know you and your relationship with the product or service you are presenting.
